About the Violin Mechanic

The Violin Mechanic, Erika Grant, is a classically trained artist and musician. A painter since childhood, she went on to complete her art studies at Maryland Institute, College of Art. She has been playing the cello since she was ten years old. Her love of beauty and visual imagery informs her instrument work. She particularly enjoys restoration and touch-up work, helping instruments both sound and look their best.

Background
Erika grew up in New York City. She has a BA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Painting and an MA from the Vermont College of Norwich University in Art Therapy. Her long and varied career includes five years as an art therapist at Springfield State Hospital and Sheppard Pratt Health System. She also has many years of experience teaching art to young schoolchildren.
In 2007, her love of music and the cello led her to train in instrument repair work. She spent ten years working at Perrin Violins in Baltimore, where she did set up, maintenance and repairs on rental instruments. She also did instrument repairs and bow rehairs on privately owned instruments and bows. While at Perrin Violins, she worked with a wide variety of musicians, from young schoolchildren to conservatory music majors to professional musicians.
In 2018, Erika opened her own workshop. She has a soft spot for families and schools and a commitment to providing quality repairs and rehairs that fit everyone's budgets.
